Cavan Surrounded by a ring of trees, Kilnavert wedge tomb is situated on a raised earthen platform (.75m high - 10m diameter) which is likely the remains of its cairn. The tomb itself consists of a single gallery with its inner side-walls still intact. The gallery is 3.5m long and narrows in width from 1.5m at the front (south west) to 1.35m at the rear (north east). A single capstone covers most of the gallery, except the rear (northeast) where another capstone and a back-stone may have originally been in situ. There are a number of stones surrounding the gallery which could be the remains of an outer facade. A standing stone (1.75m high) is located at the edge of the platform to the north. A second standing stone (2.1m high) is located 100m to the south. Known locally and on old OS maps as the 'Giant's Grave' - wedge tombs such as this were constructed in the early Bronze-Age (c.2500-2000 BCE). The name of the townland, Kilnavert is anglicised from the Irish 'Cill na bhFeart' meaning 'The Church of the Tumuli' due to the large number of ancient monuments found in the area. It is believed these monuments (including the wedge tomb) were part of an ancient ritual complex; known as Magh Slecht (Plain of Prostration), it is mentioned in the annals as a place of worship dedicated to a pre-christian deity known as Crom Cruach. The Wedge Tomb is located about 250m north of Kilnavert Church - a signposted farm-lane across the road from the church leads to the to the field (2nd on the right) where the monument is located.
